Randall K. Cooper High School Project Montag Book Drive

04/23/2018 to 05/18/2018
Union KY

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Project Montag here at Randall K. Cooper High School in Union, Kentucky is a student-founded and led volunteer project devoted to making a difference in other students' lives one book at a time.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We believe that education is a right, not a privilege. Inspired by the Ray Bradbury novel "Fahrenheit 451," we wanted to share a lesson with our community about the impact that books can have. Many of us here take education for granted, but not in Malawi, and as a result, we want to empower young minds to become the shakers and movers of their developing nations.

About our African Partners...

We are donating books to Kapirinkhonde CDSS, one of the neediest schools in Malawi. They are thrilled to start a library to support their community.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our goal is to collect 1000 books to be shipped to Malawi. We request books at U.S. pre-school to 8th grade reading level including:

-Baby board books
-Children’s picture books
-Children’s fiction and non-fiction
-Early readers
-BIG books
-Teacher's resource books for school libraries

-Accurate up-to-date atlases
-Books about Africa or African-Americans

We cannot accept:

-Books that are filled with small, dense print that might be too intimidating or boring for the age level
-Books with lots of slang, which may be difficult for English learners to follow
-Books for very young children that have many references to appliances and electronic gadgets.
-Adult paperback romance novels
-Books about United States or Canadian history or government (but DO SEND books about African-Americans)
-Books about North American or religious holidays (Easter, Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, April Fools Day, Valentine’s Day, Chanukah, etc.)
-Books that evangelize or promote a particular religion
-Magazines except for children's educational magazines and National Geographics less than 5 years old

Here's how you can contribute your books...

At Randall K. Cooper High School we will have book drop-off sites in the Library and in classrooms. If you are donating from outside the school, please contact us!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise at least $500 in order to ship the books to Africa. About $250 is used to ship the books to our partner New Orleans, and the other $250 is used to secure a spot in a shipping container to Africa. You will be able to donate money at our collection sites.

Here are some ways that you can help...

We simply ask you to donate books that you have enjoyed as a child or maybe have enjoyed with your child. We also request a donation of 25 cents per book.
