Pittsburgh African Library Project

05/01/2018 to 08/15/2018
Pittsburgh PA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Mike and Felicia Kovach. We live in Brookline, right near downtown Pittsburgh with our two bulldogs and two cats!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

It started when I was simply searching for the best place to donate a few books. I eventually found information about the African Library Project, and then we realized that there was a way to do this on an incredible scale, and to gather our friends, family, and the Pittsburgh community together to do something truly great and charitable.

About our African Partners...

Your contributions will help to build a library for children in the African country of Sierra Leone, where the adult literacy rate currently stands at around 35%. All children deserve readily-available learning materials, and with your help, this book drive will contribute to the literacy and education of countless African children.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are looking for gently used books for preschoolers up to 8th grade. Educational games or puzzles are also welcome provided everything is included and in good condition.

PS: We are actually needing more 5-8th grade books currently, but will always accept anything Pre K - 8th grade!

Here's how you can contribute your books...

From May 1st until August 15th, we will be collecting books in any way we can. We hope to have some specific dates and locations for drops offs. If you are local but not able to drop books off, I will be happy to pick them up! If you are not local but want to contribute, please contact us. Info is below.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We will need to raise $500 or so to ship the 1,000+ books to a facility in New Orleans, where they will then be put on a shipping container bound for Sierra Leone! If you are able to give a monetary donation, please click the link below:

Here are some ways that you can help...

You can help by donating books that fit the criteria, donating funds for shipping and other costs, and if you are willing to help pack and sort, let us know! Also: ask around! People love to help out when asked, and your friends and family will likely have something to contribute.

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

In addition to your own social network, contact every local or semi-local school and library you can find. Also contact local bookstores, as well as Barnes & Noble and Half Price Books.

Don't get discouraged! Send as many e-mails and make as many calls as you can and the books will come.
