African Library Project

Malawi Association in Washington (MAWA)/ALP Malawi Book Drive

05/01/2018 to 06/15/2018
Silver Spring MD

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

MAWA is a non-profit organization that convenes the Malawian Diaspora for Diaspora community development and to engage with Malawi. We have partnered with ALP and other area organizations to collect books to ship to Mvera Community Day Secondary School in Malawi.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We think that is is important for Malawians in the Diaspora to give back to the country of their ancestry through projects that help Malawians move forward. We think that literacy and education is important. In particular, we would like Malawians to get books that resonate with them so that they can better relate to the experiences and subject matter.

About our African Partners...

Mvera Community Day Secondary School (Mvera CDSS) is in Dowa Malawi.
(Mvera is along the Lilongwe-Salima road near the Mvera trading Centre). It is the largest community government secondary school in the eastern Dowa region but there existing library is not able to meet the demands of library users.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are looking for any academic and fiction (novels) for learners (students), teachers, and their community (U.S. pre-school to 8th grade reading level)
~Our preference is for Africana (Malawi, Africa or African-Diaspora/African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latino) books OR books whose authors are from Malawi, Africa, or the African-Diaspora. We would also like multicultural books. However, we will accept any books.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

1. Please drop off your books at: Ubuntu Festival in downtown Silver Spring on May 20th. Look for the MAWA booth.
2. You may also order your books on Amazon and send them to us. See our suggested list of Africana books here: http://a.co/d34xE5Y
3. Drop off books at our collection boxes around the Washington DC metro area (members of churches and employees of organizations will be notified by a member of their organization about the location of their collection box).

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Please consider making a donation through our webpage (http://www.malawiassociation.org) to go towards shipping the books OR drop off your donation in our collection box on May 20th.
