Books for Botswana

10/01/2018 to 03/01/2019
East Lansing MI

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Ketelelo Moapare: I was born in Mothomelo, Botswana, where I grew up. I graduated from Gantsi Senior Secondary School in 2012, and completed my A-levels at Maru-A-Pula in 2015 sponsored by the Botswana Government Top Achievers Scholarship. I am now in the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship and attending Michigan State University for Economic Geography degree, 2019.

The Wagler Family: Amanda, Tom, Violet (4 years), Simon (1.5) and Maya (1.5)
Amanda volunteered in Shakawe, Botswana through Peace Corps many years ago and got connected to Ketelelo when he moved to East Lansing to attend MSU. He's been coming over for dinner and birthday parties for the last four years!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

This idea came from Ketelelo, who started talking to Amanda and Tom about this a few years ago. We needed a little bit of motivation (+coffee after having twins) to get this started, so we did a little bake sale and are so overwhelmed with people wanting to donate books for this cause!

There is so much happening in the world that is terribly depressing, and we wanted to be part of something good, no matter how small or big. This seemed like a really good opportunity to DO SOMETHING.

About our African Partners...

We're waiting for information on our Botswana Partner.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Pre-school to 4th grade reading level.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We're always collecting books! You're welcome to get in touch with us, and we'll pick them up or let you know where you can drop them off. We currently have a bin on our porch where you can just leave books if we're not home!

We'll be collecting books until January 2019, so that we can be prepared to ship them in March.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

This is the harder part....raising funds for shipping the books. We've managed to raise some of the money by baking and selling cookies, but we're open further donations and suggestions! You are welcome to contribute to our GoFund me campaign or check/cash donation. Please contact one of us for more information.
